BPCL PipelineOne
Designing a unified SaaS platform for India's largest petroleum corporation
Client: Bharat Petroleum Corporation Limited (BPCL) Role: Freelance Product Designer Timeline: December 2023 โ June 2024 Platform: Web, Desktop & Mobile Scope: SaaS Product Design โ End-to-end UI/UX
The Problem
BPCL โ one of India's largest petroleum corporations โ was managing 180+ operational processes across 9 verticals through disconnected, manual systems. Field operators, safety officers, finance teams, and senior executives were all working in silos with no unified view of operations.
The result was slow decision-making, compliance risks, and significant inefficiency at scale.
They needed a single platform that could bring all of this together โ without overwhelming the people who had to use it every day.
The Challenge
Designing for BPCL meant designing for extreme complexity:
9 verticals โ Operations, HSSE, ROU, P&CS, Projects, HR, Finance, Inventory, Maintenance
Multiple user types โ from field operators on mobile to executives reviewing KPI dashboards on desktop
180+ interconnected processes โ each with their own workflows, dependencies, and data requirements
Enterprise scale โ the platform needed to be consistent, accessible, and scalable across thousands of users
The design couldn't just look good. It had to make genuinely complex workflows feel manageable.
My Role
As the primary UI/UX designer on PipelineOne, I owned the full design lifecycle:
Collaborated with BPCL stakeholders and engineers to map and analyse 180+ processes
Conducted user interviews across roles to understand pain points and mental models
Built a scalable design system to ensure consistency across all platforms and screens
Designed 1,000+ Figma screens covering workflows, dashboards, and user journeys
Developed interactive prototypes for testing and iterative refinement
Ensured all designs aligned with BPCL's operational goals and corporate identity
The Solution
PipelineOne became a unified operations platform โ one login, one interface, complete visibility across all nine verticals.
Operations Real-time monitoring dashboards and activity logs for efficient task management across pipeline operations.
HSSE โ Health, Safety, Security & Environment Compliance tracking tools and interactive analytics for safety metrics โ giving safety officers instant visibility into risk.
Right of Use (ROU) Streamlined land acquisition and documentation management, reducing a previously paper-heavy process to structured digital workflows.
Procurement & Contract Services Vendor management and procurement lifecycle tracking with real-time status updates across the supply chain.
Projects Milestone tracking for budget, tasks, and deadlines โ enabling cross-team collaboration on large infrastructure projects.
Human Resources Attendance, leave management, training, and workforce development modules tailored to BPCL's organisational structure.
Finance Budgeting tools, cash flow analysis, and financial reporting dashboards for leadership decision-making.
Inventory Management Automated stock updates and supply chain tracking, replacing manual reconciliation with real-time data.
Maintenance Preventive maintenance scheduling and equipment health monitoring โ helping field teams stay ahead of failures.
Design Principles I Applied
Clarity over completeness โ enterprise dashboards often try to show everything. I prioritised showing the right information to the right user at the right moment.
Role-specific experiences โ a field operator and a CFO have fundamentally different needs. The platform adapts its information density and navigation based on user role.
Consistency at scale โ with 1,000+ screens across 9 verticals, the design system was the backbone. Every component, pattern, and interaction was documented and reusable.
Mobile-first where it mattered โ field teams needed mobile access. Dashboards and monitoring screens were designed mobile-first, then scaled up to desktop.
Outcomes
180+ processes centralised into a single unified platform
35% increase in completed sign-ups and onboarding completion post-launch
22% boost in daily active users within the first quarter
3x improvement in task completion speed for operational workflows
Higher user satisfaction rates across role-specific testing sessions
Scalable design system built to adapt to BPCL's evolving requirements
Reflection
PipelineOne was the most complex design challenge I've worked on. It pushed me to think beyond screens โ to understand organisational structures, operational dependencies, and the very different ways people interact with data at different levels of a large enterprise.
The biggest lesson: simplicity is not the absence of complexity. It's the careful management of it.
